Can't Wait to Learn - Sudan

Created On December 4, 2024 | Last Modified On December 30, 2024

Context & Issue:
Sudan faced significant disruptions in its education system due to conflicts, leaving over 3 million children being out of school as of 2018. Many of those children were unable to access formal education due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing displacement in the country.

Solution:
UNICEF, in collaboration with War Child Holland, launched the "Can't Wait to Learn" initiative that aimed to provide a tablet-based learning approach for children in conflict zones, focusing on numeracy and literacy skills through gamified content tailored to the Sudanese curriculum. This approach was also offered to children in informal school settings.

Impact:
By 2022, the initiative reached 150,000 children, with 75% of participants showing measurable improvements in literacy and numeracy after six months. The digital delivery reduced reliance on traditional classrooms and infrastructure and gave access to all children in war-torn areas in the country

Analysis

While the program faced challenges like ensuring access to devices, maintaining reliable infrastructure, and training facilitators, its strength lies in its adaptability to local contexts and alignment with national curricula. This means it can be effectively replicated and scaled in similar environments. The success of the program highlights the potential of digital learning solutions to break down barriers and deliver education even in crisis situations, demonstrating that innovative approaches can make a real difference for students in need.
